• Understand the depth of sacrifice and commitment of Medal of Honor recipients.
Teacher will ask students to describe different medals and awards received for athletic and academic
achievements. Have students create a list of attributes that exemplify what was necessary to earn the
Ask students if they are familiar with any military awards and write their responses on the board. Ask
if they know that the highest honor in the U.S. military is the Medal of Honor.
Whole Group Activity:
Show the introductory vignette, "Medal of Honor: In Their Own Words." Ask students to listen to personal
narratives regarding attributes related to sacrifice and commitment and list them. (e.g. gallantry in action,
selflessness, service to others, spiritual dimension, need to serve, family military history, duty, privilege,
respect for life, commitment to freedom, it’s the right thing to do)
After viewing the Medal of Honor introductory vignette, the teacher will review the history of the Medal of Honor
and make connections to the students' lists of attributes.
Small Group/Individual Activity:
Using the class-generated list about the Medal of Honor and the list for athletic and academic awards, students
will create their own personal list in which they can reflect on their own examples of sacrifice and commitment.
Students will complete an individual journal entry based on how the vignette and the attributes relate to their life.
