Objectives
Students will:
• Compare and contrast the actions and character of two Korean War veterans using a graphic organizer.
• Compose an informative paragraph comparing and contrasting the two recipients.


Medal of Honor Focus:
Joseph Rodriguez, Private First Class, U.S. Army, Co. F, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division

Tibor Rubin, Corporal, U.S. Army, Co. 1, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division


Introductory Activity:
Students will view the introductory vignette, "Medal of Honor: In Their Own Words," and discuss the significance
of the Medal of Honor in today’s society.

Whole Group Activity:

View the Medal of Honor vignettes based on the stories of Joseph Rodriguez and Tibor Rubin.

While watching the vignette, students will complete a graphic organizer focusing on the character values (e.g.
sacrifice, commitment, courage, integrity, citizenship, and patriotism) demonstrated by these recipients. Students
will write three examples of how each recipient demonstrates these values. Allow time after each vignette for a
brief discussion of what students viewed.

Small Group/Individual Activity:
Students will use the information gathered in their graphic organizers to compare and contrast the actions and
character values of these men. Students will write an essay comparing and contrasting the character values of
each recipient.

Concluding Activity:
Students share their products and discuss the specific points that they focused on, allowing time for revision.

Assessment:
Essay that compares and contrasts the values of Medal of Honor recipients, graphic organizer
