Introduce students to the word citizenship. What does it mean to be a good citizen? Give some examples of what it means to be a good citizen at school. Show the Character Club Citizenship video.
Whole Group Activity:
Read Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin. Stop frequently and discuss how Pete is showing good citizenship throughout the story. Have students think-pair-share how they can show good citizenship at school.
Have each student tell you a way he or she can be a good citizen at school. Hand them a sneaker template. Have them sign and color the sneaker template “pledging” to be a good citizen. Use the sneakers to make a “Super Citizens” bulletin board in your classroom.
Participation, sneaker pledge
If this lesson is done on the first day of school, Pete the Cat can send the students on a scavenger hunt around the school to get acquainted with the different places and staff members they will need to know.
