OBJECTIVES
Students will:

  • Define the word citizenship
  • Discover what someone does when they are a good citizen
  • Determine what qualities make a good citizen


Materials Needed:


Introductory Activity:
Read I Am a Good Citizen (Kids of Character) by Mary Ann Hoffman. Then have a student summarize the book for the class. Ask students to discuss their understanding of citizenship based on the story.

As a class, come up with a definition for citizenship. Write the class definition of citizenship on the board.


Small Group Activity:
In small groups, have students discuss the five themes of citizenship using the scenario cards. One student will read each card to the group and lead the discussion.

In their groups, have the students complete the activity sheet determining the qualities of citizenship and qualities showing lack of citizenship.


Concluding Activity:
Have students write thank you notes to service members and send them to Operation Gratitude, a non-profit organization that seeks to lift spirits and meet the needs of U.S. Military and First Responder communities.
