LESSON TIME:
Two 30-minute Sessions


OBJECTIVES
Students will:

  • Identify and explain how a person they know is making a difference in the world


Materials Needed:


DAY 1
Introductory Activity:
Show Kid President’s video “How to Change the World.” Discuss how the world can be changed by ordinary people.


Whole Group Activity:
Read Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. Discuss how she made a difference in the world and how others are making a difference in the world.


Concluding Activity:
Using the People Who Make a Difference Interview worksheet, have students interview a person in their life who is making a difference in the world. Allow a few days for students to return the completed interview.


DAY 2
Individual Activity:
Have students write a paragraph about the person they interviewed.


Concluding Activity:
Have students read their paragraphs to partners or to the entire class. Ask the class what they learned from the interview. Then, ask them how they could try to make a difference now and when they grow up.


Assessment:
Class participation, interview sheet, paragraph


Extended Activity:
Invite some of the interviewees to school to speak to the students.
