LESSON TIME:
Four 25-minute Sessions


OBJECTIVES
Students will:

  • Identify what they have learned about the Medal of Honor
  • Write about a personal connection with one core value
  • Draw their favorite patriotic symbol


Materials Needed:


DAY 1
Introductory Activity:
Brainstorm what students have learned about the Medal of Honor this school year. List their thoughts on the board.


Individual Activity:
On the template labeled “What I’ve Learned about the Medal of Honor,” have students write what they have learned about the Medal.


DAY 2
Introductory Activity:
List the six core values on the board. Have students think-pair-share a personal connection they have made with one of the core values.


Individual Activity:
On the template labeled “My Personal Connection,” have students write about and draw a picture of a personal connection they have made with one of the six core values.


DAY 3
Whole Group Activity:
Brainstorm patriotic symbols that students have learned about this year, and list them on the board.


Individual Activity:
On the template titled “My Favorite Patriotic Symbol,” have students write a sentence about and draw a picture of their favorite patriotic symbol.


DAY 4
Teacher Preparation:
Staple the cover to the three templates the students have completed over the past three days.


Individual Activity:
Have students color the covers of their Medal of Honor booklets.


Concluding Activity:
As students complete their booklets, have them come to the rug for Author’s Share Chair. During Author’s Share Chair, the student sits in the teacher’s chair and shares his or her booklet with the class. As students finish their coloring, they will come to the rug to listen to the authors and share when it’s their turn.


Assessment:
Booklet, presentation
