Citizen Service Before Self Honoree Focus:
Dr. Jordy Cox, Trauma Surgeon, Colorado Springs, Colorado

Introductory Activity:
Students will write a headline for a newspaper article that tells the story of something that happened
to them during the week.

Small Group Activity:
Students will share their headline with a partner. Taking turns, each partner will share his/her headline.
After sharing the headline, students will then write a brief summary of the events that took place
to create a news story. The listening partner will take notes on the talking partner’s story using
the following 5-Ws and H chart:

News Chart 1

Small Group Activity:
Students will watch the vignette about Dr. Jordy Cox and individually fill out a “5-Ws and H” chart. The teacher
will explain that Dr. Cox was a recipient of the Citizen Service Before Self Honors because of sustained and
superior action over a period of time.

Students will add the category, “Which Medal of Honor value best fits this story?” to the chart. They will
gather into groups of four and compare notes to create a collaborative group chart. Each group will use
the chart to construct a newspaper article based on the events. Review vignette as necessary.

News Chart 2

Whole Group Activity:

Concluding Activity:
Students will think of an example from their own lives when a person acted with one or more of the

“service before self” newspaper article detailing the event.
