Honoring a Hero

Students will:
• Research a Medal of Honor recipient.
• Write an informative report.
• Create a sketch of the assigned hero to make a class hero quilt.

Medal of Honor Focus: David B. Bleak, Sergeant, U.S. Army Medical Company, 2nd Battalion,
  223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division / Korean War

Introductory Activity:
Students will view the vignette about David B. Bleak, known as the "Modern Day Hercules." Students will discuss
the character traits of citizenship and patriotism as they apply to David B. Bleak.

Small Group Activity:
Students will choose a Medal of Honor recipient to research. The report will include a title page, table of contents,
timeline, informative essay, and bibliography.

Individual Activity:
Students will write the report on the selected recipient and sketch a portrait of their chosen hero. The students
will use 9-inch squares of white construction paper for this project.

Concluding Activity:
The teacher and students will attach all squares together and form a hero quilt to hang in the hallway or
classroom. Reports may be displayed.
