Note to Teacher:
From seeding to maturity, mint takes 90 days to grow. You can harvest the plant any time after it is 3″ to 4″ tall.
Read The Biggest Pumpkin Ever by Steven Kroll.
Make a chart listing what seeds need to grow. Discuss which needs require an ongoing commitment. Pass out a few mint seeds to each child, then invite them to plant them in a large pot of soil. Create a care schedule for the plant.
Have students write about what commitments are required to make the plant grow successfully and predict what the plant will look like when it is fully grown by drawing a picture on the worksheet.
As the plant grows, discuss the rewards of the commitment. When the plant grows to 3″ to 4″ tall, harvest and enjoy mint water. Have students rub the leaves and smell them to produce a calming effect. Point out how there is a tangible enjoyment to their commitment.
