Read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. Ask the following guiding questions:
- Why didn’t Vashti want to make her art?
- How did her art teacher help her find the courage?
- What happened next?
- How did Vashti inspire courage in the little boy at the end of the story?
- How can we be courageous in our classroom and lives?
- How can we encourage others to be courageous in our class?
Have students create their own dots, either using a piece of paper and crayons/markers or a coffee filter and water colors. Tell students there is no wrong way to make their art, setting a tone of risk-taking and courage to try new things. Create gold frames if desired.
Post all the dots in a prominent place, and allow students time to take a gallery walk around and observe each piece of art. Show the Character Club Courage video and reinforce the concept of courage with students.
